Daily Dose of Humility

Apparently on Monday Earth had a close call with an asteroid.  It passed by our planet at a distance closer than the moon and only twice as high as our sattelites in orbit.  A tiny, tiny change in trajectory and it’s a good chance that a lot of damage would have been done to our planet.  And most people would have been taken by surprise while their daily routine occupied most of their attention.

In Other News…

Barry Manilow is being used as a weapon against teenagers in New Zealand.  I think the kiwi’s have just taken a step up in the arms race.

ESV = Extra Special Version

Not really.  But I had some giftcards lying around, and yesterday I used them to get an ESV Study Bible on the cheap.  Initial reflections:

1.  If “Bible-thumpers” do actually exist, they should not be allowed to purchase this Bible, because it is so large that it would kill anyone thumped with it.

2.  The resources section is pretty sizable.  It’s a great primer on theology, and probably something that could be sold separately without much drop-off in sales.

3.  It just looks cool.  I know that’s not near the top of the priority list, but, seriously, the formatting is nice on the eyes.

4.  There’s cross-references, but they’re out of the way.  I like cross-references, but sometimes the dominate the landscape.

5.  The notes are sweet.  Concise, easy to understand, and, best of all, they’re really helpful.

    I know it’s pricey at $50 for the hardcover - and a lot more for leather - but this month they’ve got a free test-drive for the online version.  From March 1-31, you can get a free account at esvstudybible.org/online/.  If you purchase the print version, you’ll get free access permanently.

    Things You Learn By Living in a New Place 2

    #6-10

    6.  It’s really strange when you tell your old roommates “I’ll see you at home.”  Awkward and strange.

    7.  Getting to know your neighbors is really difficult in Los Angeles.  First off, I’ve only seen like two of the (at least) twelve people that live around me now.  I’ve been here over a week.  Second, the people I’ve seen have not been very talkative.  I think figuring out ways to naturally get to know your neighbors is one of the most undervalued parts of reaching out.

    8.  Living in a place before you’re married is cool because you’re surrounded by things that remind you about your upcoming marriage.

    9.  Living in a place before you’re married is weird because you can’t really settle in until you’re married.  It’s like living in a hotel.

    10.  Taking engagement photos in the rain is either really sweet or kind of rough.  I’ll let you know in a few hours.  This one is only loosely apartment affiliated.  By loosely, I mean not at all.
